Friday marked the first time Shane Matejcek ever had competed in the Boys State Bowling Tournament.
His performance was nothing short of impressive as the Lockport senior finished the opening two rounds atop the leaderboard at St. Clair Bowl in O’Fallon.
“Shane bowled outstanding,” Lockport coach Jeff Wyatt said. “He kept his cool and just rolled the ball.
“He’s invested a lot of time into his game and he just never gives up. He keeps digging.”
Minooka (6,488) held first place in the team standings, just ahead of O’Fallon (6,438) and Lockport (6,422).
Reigning state champion Andrew (6,267) was seventh and Oak Lawn (6,239) ninth. The top 12 teams and 30 individuals from non-advancing teams qualified for the final two rounds Saturday.
Matejcek posted a six-game score of 1,498, which included a 286 game. His lead was 37 pins over second-place occupant Billy Goodman, of O’Fallon.
“I looked at it like it was just another tournament,” Matejcek said.
“I just made sure to stay within my game. I picked up my spares, and when I struggled, the other guys on the team picked me up.”
David Wysocki (1,296), Brian Hodolitz (1,279) and Alex Wilmsen (1,218) also starred for Lockport.
Oak Lawn’s Ryan Kirby (1,360) was 11th and Andrew’s Kyle Krol (1,331) tied for 14th.
