The drawn-up play called for a layup, but Reavis’ Nick Bal was a more than worthy second option on the wing.
With the game on the line, the senior made the most of his opportunity.
“If the layup isn’t there, my teammates down screen for me to get open,” Bal said. “They did, and I was able to make the play.”
In a tie game Friday against Oak Lawn, Bal dribbled into traffic in the lane and hit a floater at the buzzer for a 42-40 Reavis victory in a South Suburban Red thriller.
“Absolutely, I wanted the ball,” Bal said with a smile after finishing with 18 points.
Eddie Puha added 10 points for Reavis (14-5, 5-3).
Oak Lawn (7-15, 2-7) missed the potential game-winner with 15 seconds left when Sean Altenburg’s layup rolled off the rim with Puha rebounding the miss.
After a timeout, Bal converted on the broken play.
“They played good defense all game, but we were able to make enough plays down the stretch,” Bal said.
Shawn Cannon (12 points) and Bob Kametas (10) led Oak Lawn.
The fourth quarter featured three ties and three lead changes.
