THE STAR: Hillcrest point guard Kyle Oden came off the bench to register 17 points, including nine during the decisive second quarter. Oden’s backcourt mate, Jovan Mooring, added 15 points to the winning effort.
THE MOMENT: Hillcrest led 11-9 after one quarter. Enter Oden, a 5-foot-10 senior who sat out the first quarter for breaking a team rule. The Hawks promptly reeled off a 13-0 run, with Oden providing six points, to give No. 6 Hillcrest (15-5, 9-0) a 22-9 advantage. No. 7 T.F. North (16-6, 8-1) never got to within single digits the rest of the way.
THE QUOTE: “When I come off the bench, I come out angry. I want to give my team a spark and make things happen.” — Oden.
THE BREAKDOWN: One of the major differences in the game was free-throw shooting. Hillcrest converted 23-of-33 attempts, while T.F. North was a futile 6-of-23 from the charity stripe. Delmon Brame, a 6-6 senior, and Taylor Adway, a 6-7 sophomore, provided Hillcrest with an inside presence, finishing with 10 and eight points, respectively. Greg McClain (14 points), Marquis Todd (12) and D.J. Deere (10) paced the Meteors.
