John Konecki, the offensive coordinator for Crete-Monee’s 2012 Class 6A state football champion, has been named to replace former coach Jerry Verde.
District 201U Supt. Dr. John Rodgers announced the appointment Sunday at the Warriors’ team banquet.
“We felt as though the best candidate to replace coach Jerry Verde was already on our staff,” Rodgers said in a statement released by the school. “John Konecki has proved himself through the success of his offense, extensive coaching experience, and winning attitude.
“We wish coach Verde continued success and the best of luck in his future endeavors. We are very grateful for all that he has done for our players and the program over the past six years.”
Verde went 56-14 at Crete-Monee. In December, he announced he’d return to his alma mater, Marian Catholic, to replace Dave Mattio, who had coached the Spartans for 37 years.
Konecki was the Warriors’ offensive coordinator/offensive line coach from 2007 to ’12. He is also Crete-Monee’s NCAA Liaison, working with athletes to ensure they meet NCAA eligibility requirements.
“I will stress the importance of being a scholar-athlete,” Konecki said in the release. “Success on the field at Crete-Monee High School will be coupled with success in the classroom. It is my belief that the two facets of a student-athlete’s life should work in congruence, adding benefits to a young man’s high school career.”
Konecki also is head coach and offensive coordinator for the Men’s Swedish National Team and the Chicago Force, a women’s team.
