Girls Basketball: Oak Lawn taking aim at history

Updated: March 6, 2013 6:20AM

With three more victories, Oak Lawn would tie the all-time single-season victory mark set by the Dana Sullivan-led 21-7 squad in 2002-03.

With two more victories, the Spartans (18-5 overall), who already have clinched the Red division title, would finish the 2012-13 campaign with a 12-1 record in the South Suburban Conference.

“You know, I thought we would do well with a good core group coming back,” Spartans coach Janet Haubenreiser said. “I don’t know about 10-1, but I thought we’d have a good season.”

The Spartans went 2-0 last week as forward Brianna Markusic led them to victories over Chicago Christian and Eisenhower.

The 5-foot-11 sophomore totaled 31 points and 21 rebounds for the two games. She is averaging 10.9 points and 9.4 rebounds per game.

“Brianna has been our biggest surprise,” Haubenreiser said. “She played for us a little bit at the end of the season as a freshman, but she’s really kind of grown and matured into her body. She’s strong, and she has stepped up huge for us this year.”

The Spartans also have been led this season by juniors Brooke Annerino, Jannah Mahmood and LaTondra Brooks.

Brooks, who is averaging 15.3 points, 5.5 assists and 5.4 steals per contest, was out of the lineup while recovering from a concussion on Dec. 13 when the Spartans took Hillcrest to the wire before dropping a 57-51 decision.

“I’m really proud of my girls for the effort they put in without LaTondra, but I’d like to see what it would have been like with her out there,” Haubenreiser said.

For the books

As Bloom was en route to clinching the Southland Athletic Conference title with a victory Thursday over Crete-Monee, senior Bria Gaines scored the 1,500th point of her high school varsity career. Going into the week, Gaines was eight rebounds away from 800 for her career.

Stagg junior Casey McMahon, meanwhile, broke the school single-season three-point record by hitting her 67th in a win over Thornridge. This season she also has set new Stagg standards for three-pointers in a game (8) and career (122).
