High School/Local College Sports Roundup for Feb. 9, 2013

Boys Basketball

Bremen 59, Jones 50: Marcus Geralds scored 19 points and Otis Lane added 11 to pace Bremen (9-12) in Midlothian.

Rich East 104, Eisenhower 61: Don Henderson finished with 34 points to spark Rich East (13-6) in Blue Island. Eisenhower fell to 5-16.

Girls Basketball

Glenbrook South 45, No. 2 Morgan Park 44: Khalilah Morrow had a team-high 12 points for visiting Morgan Park (20-6).

No. 4 Marist 76, St. Viator 39: JeTaun Rouse netted 24 points and Leah Bolton scored 17 to power visiting Marist (21-9, 6-3) in the East Suburban Catholic. Bria Stallworth added 12 points for the RedHawks.

Wrestling

Class 3A Moline Individual Sectional: Lincoln-Way East’s Kyle Langenderfer ran his record to 39-0 by winning the championship at 152 pounds. Lincoln-Way Central led all area squads by advancing four wrestlers to the state meet, including 170-pound champion Bryce Gorman. Lockport had a trio of individuals moving on, the group headlined by 113-pound winner Brian Rossi. Homewood-Flossmoor’s Donnie Bell (182) and Providence’s Vince Ambrose (220) also won crowns.

Class 1A Plano Individual Sectional: Illiana Christian’s Zach Groen (170) qualified for the state tournament after coming in third.

Boys Diving

Homewood-Flossmoor Invitational: Marian Catholic’s Joey Cifelli won first place after accumulating 503.70 points over 11 attempts. His performance helped the Spartans (20 points) finish third behind Fenwick (28) and Fremd (27). Lincoln-Way Central’s Ryan Kojder (393.05) came in fourth.

Boys Indoor Track & Field

Thornwood Invitational: Thornwood won seven of 17 events in the five-team, non-scoring meet. The Thunderbirds were led by Kenneth Allen, who posted the top times in the 50-yard dash (5.63 seconds) and 300-yard dash (33.60). Mike McKenzie added a victory in the shot put (42 feet, inches) for Thornwood, which also won the mile relay (3 minutes, 49.06 seconds). Lockport prevailed in five events, winners for the Porters including J.T. Orban in the mile run (4:58.75), Kevin Giroux in the two-mile run (10:19.28) and Aaron Ambrose in the pole vault (10-6). Illiana Christian’s Kevin Vroegh crossed the finish line first in the 580-yard run (2:10.08).

Girls Indoor Track & Field

Lockport Invitational: Wins by Kimberly Johnson in the mile run (5:50.92), Taylor Latta in the 2-mile run (13:16.55) and Lane Kadlec in the shot put (32-2) helped Lockport (164) capture first place in the five-team meet. Runner-up Mother McAuley (76) was led by Briana Driver, who prevailed in the 55-meter dash (7.48) and long jump (15-9). Imani Haynes posted victories in the 55-meter hurdles (9.13) and 200-meter dash (27.74) in guiding Marian Catholic (68) to a third-place finish.

Hockey

Glenbrook South 3, Mount Carmel 2: Dylan Klouda and Richard Fordon netted goals for Mount Carmel in the Hockey City Classic at Soldier Field.

Men’s Basketball

South Suburban 101, Indiana Dabney 71: Michael Harris posted game highs with 30 points and eight rebounds for host South Suburban (24-2).

Men’s Volleyball

St. Xavier 18-25-25-25, Siena Heights (Mich.) 25-14-14-20: Dan French had 36 assists and Justin Cousin added 13 kills to spark host St. Xavier (2-8, 2-4) in the East Division of the Mid-America Men’s Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference.
