CHAMPAIGN — The stakes couldn’t get much higher for one of the top rivalries in Illinois high school wrestling.

Oak Forest’s Alec Brown and Tinley Park’s Derek Schultz, two SouthtownStar All-Area linebackers, clashed for the fourth time Friday at Assembly Hall.

The payoff? A trip to the Class 2A finals.

The 220-pounders again were evenly matched, but Schultz used a late takedown to secure a 4-2 victory. It was an outstanding day for the Titans senior, who beat Montini’s highly touted Edgar Ruano to reach the semifinals.

“I knew (Brown) would push me as hard as anyone else in the state,” Schultz said. “I just wanted to square off my attacks and come out with the win. I feel good, but that job’s not done.”

The finals cupboard wasn’t bare for Oak Forest, however. Sophomore Danny Swan avenged an early season defeat to top Vernon Hill’s Jordan Reich. Swan will look to avenge another loss when he will face Rich Central’s unbeaten Nkosi Moody on Saturday for the 106-pound state title.

“(Reich) beat me earlier this season so I was a little intimidated going into the match,” Swan said. “I was a little worried, but I knew I could take him.”

In one of the day’s biggest surprises, Rich South’s Roy Hickman defeated the top seed at 195 pounds, Sycamore’s Jacob Davis. Hickman becomes the first Rich South wrestler to reach the individual state finals.

“I’m a senior. I made it to state last year and lost first round,” Hickman said. “Now I have nothing to lose.”

In Class 3A, five Southland wrestlers with unblemished records will vie for titles: Brother Rice’s Rudy Yates (106), Mount Carmel’s Bryce Brill (145), Lincoln-Way East’s Kyle Langenderfer (152) and Sandburg’s Colin Holler (170) and Ricky Robertson (195).

Sandburg also has finalists in Sebastian Pique (120) and C.J. Brucki (160). Brucki looked dominant, topping Oak-Park River Forest’s previously unbeaten Davonte Mahomes before beating Brother Rice’s Nuntreae Jackson in the semifinals.

In a budding rivalry, Marist’s Mark Duda will meet Thornton’s Kris Williams for the 113-pound crown. Marist’s Tom Howell (220) also reached the finals. Homewood-Flossmoor will be represented by Donnie Bell in the 182-pound title bout.
