Skip Adamson, who has coached the Lincoln-Way co-op boys gymnastics team to either a first- or second-place finish in seven of the previous eight state meets, will not be coaching the team in 2013.

Adamson, also the girls gymnastics coach, would not discuss the reasons behind his ouster, other than to say that he was not offered a contract for the boys gymnastics position.

“There is really nothing I can say right now, because it’s a personnel matter,” he said Tuesday. “I’m not even sure how to describe it.

“Your best route would be to call (school district 210 community relations director) Stacy Holland and discuss it with her. After you get her side, then I’ll figure out what to do.”

Holland declined to elaborate, saying only, “That’s a personnel issue. We’re transitioning to a new gymnastics coaching team.”

Jay Johnson, an assistant to Adamson for nine seasons, though not for the past two seasons, will coach the boys team in 2013. The 1986 Lincoln-Way graduate and former gymnast is the aquatics director at Lincoln-Way North.

Adamson was identified by Holland as a math teacher at Lincoln-Way Central, but two sources said Adamson no longer is teaching and was removed from the classroom before the end of the girls gymnastics season. Adamson remained in charge of Lincoln-Way’s girls squad through the end of its season, at sectional competition Feb. 6.

Adamson began coaching at Lincoln-Way Central in 1993, first with the boys squad, adding the girls in 1995. The boys team finished second in state in 1997, while the girls qualified for state in 1995 and ’96.

In 2001, Adamson began coaching the Lincoln-Way co-op squads. The boys team won state titles in 2006 and ’11, was second in 2005, ’08, ’09, ’10 and ’12, and fourth in ’02 and ’07. The girls squad qualified for state in ’06 and ’08.
