The roar heard from Lincoln-Way North’s locker room after a thrilling 64-61 victory over host Stagg was unmistakable. The Phoenix were conference champions.
Friday’s victory — coupled with a Thornton loss to Thornwood — gave North a share of its first SouthWest Suburban Red title in school history.
“This is amazing,” said senior Daryle Morgan, who scored eight of his 12 points in the fourth quarter. “It feels great to make history and be able to go out on top.”
Tre Lewis netted 17 points and Cody Murphy had 14 points and nine rebounds to lead North (19-8, 11-3) in a game that featured 10 ties and 14 lead changes.
Sean Dwyer (19 points), Kevin White (16 points) and Max Strus (11 points, 6 assists) paced Stagg (18-8, 8-6).
“Stagg is one heck of a basketball team,” North coach John Terry said. “They play hard and smart and are very well-coached.”
Dwyer had a chance to tie the game as time expired but his three-pointer fell short.
