Malik Williams said he had never hit a buzzer-beater before Friday night.
The DuSable senior’s first was enough to continue the 13th-seeded Panthers’ surprise run and break the hearts of a talented St. Rita squad as DuSable topped the host Mustangs 54-52 in a Class 4A regional final.
Demetrius Pointer rebounded a Charles Matthews miss and raced down the court before finding Williams just inside the three-point line on the right wing. Williams’ shot touched nothing but net.
“I saw the clock ticking down and I was just hoping my point guard (Pointer) would make a good pass,” Williams said. “I let my team down the whole game and I wanted to redeem myself.”
Chris Galbreath had 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead DuSable (14-10), which will meet Simeon in the Argo Sectional semifinals. Pointer added 14 points and Williams finished with eight points and six rebounds.
Dominique Matthews (11 points), Charles Matthews (10 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists) and Myles Carter (9 points) paced St. Rita (19-8), which led 52-50 with 58 seconds to go before Galbreath tied it with a putback to set up Williams’ heroics.
“(DuSable) made every big shot,” St. Rita coach Gary DeCesare said. “They beat us to all the 50-50 balls and that’s why we lost.”
