As a measure of just how wild his team’s 61-60 Class 3A regional final loss to Fenger was Evergreen Park coach Pat Flannigan offered this:
“I never high-fived the opposing head coach at halftime before,” he said. “What a fun game to be a part of.”
Of course, at halftime Evergreen Park’s Tobi Oladejo had just drained a buzzer-beating three-pointer and the Mustangs (8-22), without a regional title since 1974, were heading to the locker room up 28-24.
That lead didn’t hold, nor did a three-point edge with 2:18 left in the fourth quarter. Fenger (16-8) went ahead for good on a three-point play from Victor Watson (16 points, 9 rebounds) with 1:02 left and advanced to a 7:30 game Tuesday in the St. Laurence Sectional against Morgan Park.
Fenger also got 11 points from Elonte Davis and nine each from Isaih Davis and Keiquan Mitchell. Evergreen Park was led by sophomore guard Isaac Mathews’ 23 points, while Oladejo and King Juachon had 10 each. Eight of Juachon’s points came in the fourth quarter, and his attempt at a game-winner from the middle of the lane glanced off the front rim as time expired.
Fenger thrived with its defense, forcing 18 turnovers over the first three quarters.
“We have a deep team that’s guard-heavy,” Fenger coach Romian Crockett said. “When we’re full-court, man-to-man, it’s mayhem.”
