St. Xavier was no match for the nation’s No. 2-ranked team in NAIA Division II women’s basketball.
St. Francis (Ind.) jumped out to an early 11-point lead and never looked back en route to an 82-69 victory Friday in the second round of the NAIA National Championship in Sioux City, Iowa.
Brooke Ridley and Kayla Drake each scored 14 points to pace top-seeded St. Francis (32-2), which avenged a 17-point loss to St. Xavier in December.
Morgan Stuut posted team bests with 13 points and six rebounds for fifth-seed St. Xavier (25-7), which fell behind 13-2 just five minutes into the game.
Niara Harris added 10 points for the Cougars, who trailed by as many as 25 points early in the second half before making the outcome respectable.
St. Xavier also was eliminated on the men’s side of the Division II National Championship, falling 83-73 to No. 11 seed Indiana-Southeast in second-round play in Point Lookout, Mo.
Jack Krieger’s 19 points were the most for St. Xavier (29-6), the No. 6 seed in the tournament. His total included 5-of-11 accuracy from three-point range.
Cameron Mitchell scored a season-high 31 points for Indiana-Southeast (29-4).
