St. Francis sophomore right-hander Adam Panayotovich was named the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference’s Pitcher of the Week for the period ending March 17.
It’s the third time Panayotovich has won this award in his career. The Palos Park resident also was the CCAC’s Pitcher of the Week for the period ending March 10.
On March 16, Panayotovich posted a complete-game victory as the Saints opened CCAC play with a 3-2 win over visiting Olivet Nazarene at Joliet Junior College. Panayotovich, who prepped at Mount Carmel, held the Tigers hitless for the first five innings and eight innings in all, while striking out 10 and walking four.
Nine days earlier, Panayotovich earned his first CCAC weekly award of the season as he threw 11 innings of shutout baseball, but did not get the win in St. Francis’ 1-0 victory in 12 innings over Bethel (Ind.). In that game he struck out a career-high 12, while scattering seven hits.
Through 351/3 innings covering five starts (one complete game) for the season, Panayotovich was 2-1 with a 3.06 ERA. He struck out 29 while walking eight.
Getting on track
Lewis senior Kamille Ferguson (Mother McAuley) was named the Great Lakes Valley Conference’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week for the period ending Feb. 10.
Ferguson won the 200-meter dash at the Chicagoland Championships with a NCAA provisional mark of 24.90 seconds. That mark is second-best in Lewis history, runner-up only to former Latvian Olympian Lana Jekabsone’s time of 24.63.
The award was Ferguson’s second of the season and was the fifth straight week a Lewis student-athlete was recognized by the GLVC for their efforts. Ferguson also was the GLVC’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week for the period ending Jan. 13.
On the Horizon
Loyola sophomore Alison Szykowny (Shepard) was chosen the Horizon League’s Field Athlete of the Week for the period ending Jan. 29.
At the Chicago Duals held Jan. 26 at the University of Chicago, the Palos Heights native finished in first place in both the weight throw (18.05m) — beating her own school record — and the shot put (13.42m).
During the indoor track and field season in the Horizon League, Szykowny was second in the shot put with a put of 13.95 meters set Jan. 18 at the Gladstein Invitational. In the weight throw, Szykowny’s performance at the Chicago Duals was the best in the league for the 2012-13 season.
