This week we shine the spotlight on: Kathy Flanagan, Oak Forest badminton; Jimmy Page, Chicago Christian tennis; Mykel Adams, Seton track and field; and Nick VanderZanden, Andrew volleyball.
Sr., Oak Forest, Badminton
Flanagan, also a volleyball player for the Bengals, started attending badminton camps when she was in sixth grade.
“The footwork is pretty close to volleyball,” she said. “I love the mental toughness you need to have to play badminton. If you whiff, you can’t let that affect you. If you do, the game will be over fast.”
Along with competing in sports year-round, Flanagan also sings in the school’s choir.
Jr., Tennis, Chicago Christian
The Flossmoor resident, who transferred to the Palos Heights school from Homewood-Flossmoor his sophomore year, said he gets kidded about sharing the name with the famous Led Zeppelin guitarist.
Page hopes for his own version of “Celebration Day” come the postseason. “I’m hoping to take top 15 in the state this year and next year I’m taking top five,” he said. “I’ve got big hopes.”
Sr., Track & Field, Seton
Adams was seventh in the 400-meter dash at the 2012 Class 1A state meet and ran on the state champion 400 relay.
“Running is my passion,’’ she said. “I feel good when I run. I just love it.’’
Adams and Nancy Jeanty return to the 400 relay that won in a 1A meet-record 48.51 seconds.
“For us losing the seniors from last year, we know we have to step it up,’’ Adams said. “I know we have the ability to make it downstate.’’
Jr., Volleyball, Andrew
VanderZanden, a 6-foot-9 middle hitter, set the Andrew single-match record for blocks with 10 in a three-set victory over Lockport earlier this season.
“From my perspective, back-row defense is important, so I try to take the blunt of it by blocking so they don’t have to work as hard,” he said.
The junior kept the block record in the family, stealing the title from older brother, Nathan, whom he played with last season.
