With five freshmen on the roster and most of them starting, growing pains have been evident for Marian Catholic, which entered the week barely over .500.
In one regard, however, everybody is on same page when it comes to unity, according to fourth-year varsity player Alex Nickel.
“That was a big thing for us coming into this year,” she said. “When we were younger, when we were their ages, the seniors really looked down on us and we knew how it felt. So this year we were like, ‘OK, we’re seniors, and we know we’re going to have a lot of freshmen on this team.’ We wanted to make sure we incorporated them into everything we did on this team.”
An trip for a tournament at Disney World brought an opportunity that wasn’t wasted.
“When we were going around parks or playing a game we made sure they were comfortable with us,” Nickel said. “I think we did a good job, because we don’t have that freshman-senior, freshman-junior kind of relationship. It’s friendship. We don’t look down at them as younger. We look at them as teammates.
“We’re happy to have them on this team. They’re great ballplayers and they work their butts off at practice.”
Striking out cancer
On May 14, Bremen and Lemont will play a South Suburban contest with more than a league victory in mind.
The game, scheduled at the Lemont High School Sports Complex, 12900 W. 131st St., also will feature the second annual “Strike Out Cancer” fundraiser, with proceeds to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the American Cancer Society.
The softball program at Lemont will be selling “LHS Strikes Out Cancer” T-shirts for $10 and ribbons for $1 in advance of the event. Last year’s event raised in excess of $5,000, according to Lemont athletic director John Jones.
“Our players and coaches are really looking forward to this event, which brings attention to the more important things in life,” he said.
