Minnesota added a commitment Monday from Mount Carmel junior defensive lineman Steven Richardson. Richardson chose the Gophers over offers Western Michigan and Northern Illinois.
“I knew that I wanted to go to Minnesota for a long time, but I just wanted to see it there, so I visited a couple times,” Richardson said. “When I knew I wanted to commit to them, I knew I wanted to do it in person, so I decided that I would tell them when they came down or do it up there when I visited the next time.”
That day came sooner than Richardson expected, but for the lineman, the sooner the better.
“I was planning on going back up to Minnesota on July 21 to commit there,” Richardson said. “It just so happened that the coaches came down to our morning workouts on Monday so I committed.”
Looking back on the visits to Minnesota, it took two trips for Richardson to know it was where he wanted to spend his college years.
“How much I liked it kept growing, the first time I went there it was like, ‘OK, this is obviously where I want to be,’ ” Richardson said. “That feeling just kept growing, it moved to, ‘OK, this is definitely where I want to be.’ And then I saw more and knew this is really where I want to be. I really, really like Minnesota.”
Richardson will join Enoch Smith Jr., who is verbally committed to Michigan State, on the defensive line for reigning Class 8A state champion Mount Carmel in the fall.
“The expectations are pretty much the same, maybe even actually a little bit higher than last year,” Richardson said. “For me, I want to win the very first game, then I want to win Catholic League, which is something that the rising seniors haven’t done at Mount Carmel, then to win state.”
And with recruiting coming to an end for the 5-foot-11, 280-pound defensive lineman, he can focus more on Mount Carmel.
“I was mainly focused on my school, but now I can really focused on school with recruiting out of the way,” Richardson said. “I wasn’t too focused on the recruiting much and I didn’t go to camps or combines and such. It’s now just super-focused on Mount Carmel.”
