SouthtownStar Athletes On Campus: Hannah Gardner honored for big softball season at Olivet Nazarene

Olivet Nazarene’s Hannah Gardner has been named to the 2013 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics All-America First Team in women’s softball.

Gardner, the Tigers’ second baseman, finished the season with a .490 batting average. The Providence graduate also contributed 23 doubles, seven triples and five home runs. The junior added 91 RBI and 70 runs, to go along with setting an NAIA record with a 33-game hitting streak.

The Frankfort resident, who also was chosen the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year, helped Olivet Nazarene to a 48-9 overall record and a berth in the NAIA National Tournament’s opening round.

Gardner, who was the CCAC Freshman of the Year in 2011, has been on the All-CCAC Team in each of the last three seasons. She also was named to the NAIA’s All-American Second Team in 2012.

DiGiovanni honored

Indiana Tech women’s lacrosse player Alexis DiGiovanni (Marian Catholic) was named to the All-Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference’s Honorable Mention Team for the 2013 season.

The sophomore, who played the attack position for the Warriors, appeared in 16 games (15 starts). The Chicago Heights resident had 33 goals and 18 assists.

DiGiovanni finished second on Indiana Tech in assists, third in points and fourth in goals.

Coming up Rosenberger

St. Ambrose University sophomore outfielder Matt Rosenberger was one of three Fighting Bees named to the 2013 All-Midwest Collegiate Conference First Team.

The Frankfort native batted .323 with six doubles, one triple and two homers. Rosenberger, who prepped at Lincoln-Way East, added 18 runs and 14 RBI.

Rosenberger, who was a member of the All-MCC Honorable Mention Team in 2012, helped St. Ambrose finish 15-26 overall and 10-10 in the MCC this season.

Reaching the Summit

Twenty-two student-athletes from the Southland were among the 1,090 student-athletes named to the Summit League’s 2012-13 Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll.

In order to be selected, a student-athlete must have a 3.0 or better grade-point average in the semester in which he or she competes and must use a year of eligibility.

Honored for their academic excellence were Eastern Illinois men’s swimmers Jacob Roberts (Lincoln-Way North) and Steven Swiercz (Lincoln-Way East); Eastern Illinois women’s swimmer Caitlin Danforth (Oak Lawn); IUPUI softball players Angela Bartucci (Andrew) and Jocelyn Oppenhuis (Illiana Christian); South Dakota women’s swimmer Chelsea Coneset (Lockport); South Dakota State softball player Jessica Markanich (Homewood-Flossmoor); Western Illinois baseball player Dan Dispensa (St. Rita) and Western Illinois men’s basketball players Jordan Foster (Seton) and Don McAvoy (Mount Carmel).

Also feted were Western Illinois men’s swimmer and Palos Heights resident Viktor Rusenas; Western Illinois softball players Tierney Bottino (Lockport), Kacyee Hart (Lincoln-Way East), Emma Jarrell (Sandburg), Bria Jones (Shepard), Megg Kelly (Mount Assisi), Karissa Kouchis (Sandburg), Lia Romeo (Lockport) and Teagan Walsh (Marist); Western Illinois men’s track and field athlete Cedric Cheeks (Homewood-Flossmoor) and Western Illinois women’s track and field athletes Dana LaRue (Thornwood) and Charnelle Williams (Morgan Park).
