Twenty-year-old David Cooke fired a 6-under par 66 Tuesday at the Glen Club to play his way into contention in the 64th Illinois Open.

He’s been here before.

“I was 5-under (par) after the second round last year and was in the next-to-last group the final day and went out and shot a 76,” the Bolingbrook resident said of his drop to a tie for 20th place in 2012, which was good enough to get him an exemption (top 25) into this year’s event.

He opened Monday with a 2-over 74 and enters Wednesday’s final round tied for sixth place at 4-under 140.

Cooke, a redshirt freshman last year at Purdue who has transferred to North Carolina State to take advantage of warmer weather, thinks he’s learned from last year’s experience.

“Don’t think too much about it,” Cooke said of his plan for the final 18 holes. “Just go out and play. There’s no trying to protect anything because there are guys out here who are gonna go out and shoot low.”

Cooke, who tied for sixth in the Class 3A state finals to earn All-State honors his senior year at Bolingbrook, said he finished last season with the fourth-best scoring average for the Boilermakers. He has been granted is release from Purdue and will be eligible to play immediately for the Wolfpack.

“There was little or no wind (Tuesday),” said Cooke, who played his second round early Tuesday.

He shot a 1-under 35 on the front nine, then closed with five birdies and four pars for a 31 on the back nine.

“I was playing well (Tuesday) and made some birdies on the back. One of my best shots of the day came on (the 212-yard par-3) 17,” he said. “My tee shot was short and I chipped it in from 40 yards out.

“I’m just gong to try to go out there and try not to beat myself (Wednesday). (Monday) I didn’t play the easy holes well and it kind of cost me.”
