Colin Monnier was one of three University of Dayton football players chosen to the 2013 Preseason All-Pioneer Football League Team.
Monnier, the Flyers’ 2012 MVP, was the only member of Dayton’s defense to start every game last year. He also garnered a First-Team All-PFL pick.
In 2012, Monnier, a redshirt senior linebacker who prepped at Marist, led the Flyers in tackles (92), solo tackles (46) and tackles for loss (12). He also tied for second in interceptions (2), batted away another pass and had one quarterback hurry.
The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Monnier reached double figures in tackles in four games in 2012, including 12 against FCS playoff team Illinois State and 10 in a 28-13 win over PFL co-champion Drake.
Last season, Monnier helped the Flyers finish 6-5 overall and 5-3 in the PFL.
A good Ladd
St. Xavier senior offensive lineman Tim Ladd (St. Rita) has been named to the College Football America 2013 NAIA Preseason All-America Team.
Ladd has been a starter on the offensive line each of his previous three years with the Cougars. In 2012, he was named to the Mid-States Football Association All-Mideast League Second Team.
“Tim has been a rock for our program on the offensive line the past three years and it’s hard to believe that he will be a senior this fall,” Cougars coach Mike Feminis said in a statement. “He’s not only a great football player, but a great person as well and definitely deserving of whatever accolades he receives.
“I know he is very excited about his senior season and will do whatever it takes to help get this team ready to compete for a national championship.”
St. Xavier goes into the 2013 campaign ranked No. 4 in the NAIA. The Cougars kick off the season Sept. 7 against No. 2-ranked Marian University (Ind.).
Best and brightest
Mount Carmel graduate Justin Morgan was one of four members of Western Illinois University’s football team to receive the Missouri Valley Football Conference’s President’s Council Academic Excellence Award.
The President’s Council Academic Excellence Award requires a minimum 3.50 cumulative grade-point average and participation in athletics a minimum of two years. The student-athlete must be within 18 hours of graduation.
The Leathernecks also had 31 football student-athletes named to the MVFC Academic Honor Roll. To qualify, a student-athlete must have recorded a minimum 3.0 GPA for a specified term, must have been a member of an athletics team, and must have a minimum of 12 hours of enrollment.
In addition to Morgan, four other Southland residents who are members of Western Illinois’ football team also were named to the Honor Roll. Feted were freshman offensive lineman Chandon Hawkins (Mount Carmel), sophomore offensive lineman and Crete resident Jamal Keaton (King), freshman linebacker Kyle Krull (Lemont) and freshman offensive lineman Mike Love (Andrew).
