Josh Harris scored on a 4-yard run and a 43-yard catch in the second half as Plainfield South outscored Lemont 14-0 after the break. The Indians barely were outgained (298-280) but could not overcome five turnovers and 115 penalty yards as they lost their season opener for the first time since 2006.
Cougars quarterback Kody Voda lofted a pass down the middle of the field that Harris came down with for a 33-yard touchdown with 35 seconds left in the first half to give Plainfield South the lead for good.
Harris, whose four touchdowns included a 4-yard run 95 seconds in after Lemont fumbled on the first play from scrimmage, ran 22 times for 124 yards and caught two passes for 76 yards.
BY THE NUMBERS
Voda finished 8-of-20 for 134 yards. Roberto Carrillo had two fumble recoveries for Plainfield South. Chris Thompson threw for 49 yards and ran for 30 for Lemont, while Matt Monaco caught four passes for 35 yards and a touchdown.
“We had to get the cobwebs out, then we really stepped up. We’re going to enjoy this win (Saturday), then put it aside.” — Harris
