Shovel, shovel, shovel. Bloom quarterback Kendall McGinnis threw three shovel passes to running back Justus Brantley and the senior went off to the races for scores of 48, 31 and 73 yards in the first half to take a 22-7 lead in the home nonconference win Saturday.
The 73-yard connection came with seven seconds left in the half, one play after Thornwood (0-1) scored to close the gap to 14-7.
Brantley, who said he has drawn interest from Notre Dame and Northwestern, had 152 receiving yards and 85 rushing yards. McGinnis threw for 273 yards and ran for 46.
BY THE NUMBERS
Because of lightning and rain, the game started 2 hours, 8 minutes after the Bloom band played the national anthem. Bloom (1-0) racked up 451 yards but was penalized for 90. Thornwood quarterback DaQuan Richie ran for 68 yards and threw for 75.
“It worked mainly because we have a Division I quarterback and a great O-line. We were able to execute and run the play right for touchdowns.” — McGinnis, on why the shovel passes were successful.
