Roosevelt University outside hitter Valerie Cutrone was named the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week for the period ending Aug. 27.
This marks the first weekly honor for Cutrone, who prepped at Sandburg. It also is the first CCAC Player of the Week award for a Roosevelt volleyball player in the program’s three-plus-years history.
Cutrone, who previously attended the College of Coastal Georgia, keyed a pair of three-set wins for the Lakers on Aug. 24, totaling a team-high 23 kills (3.83 per match) and 17 digs (2.83 per match) at the Roosevelt Volleyball Tournament.
The Orland Park resident just missed a double-double in a win over Rochester, totaling 13 kills and nine digs to go with two blocks. Cutrone opened the season with 10 kills and eight digs against Goshen.
Seven Southland residents were among the 2,461 student-athletes named to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s Academic Honor Roll for the 2012-13 school year.
To achieve honor roll status, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 and have at least two terms of attendance at the certifying member institution, excluding summer terms.
Honored were Central Missouri women’s basketball player and Orland Park resident Danielle Barry (Providence), Truman State soccer player and Chicagoan Mike Kane (Brother Rice), Truman State baseball player and Oak Lawn resident Tim Lee (Richards), Fort Hays State volleyball player and Frankfort resident Lauren Lorenz (Lincoln-Way East), Truman State football players and Lemont graduates Brett and Connor Nagel, and Lindenwood University men’s basketball player and Harvey resident Richie Thompson (Thornton).
Kudos for Colleen
Ohio Northern softball player Colleen Baliga (Marian Catholic) earned two accolades for her performance during the 2013 season.
The junior outfielder was named to the All-Central Region Second Team by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Additionally, the Crete resident also was named to the All-Ohio Athletic Conference First Team.
Baliga appeared in 25 games for the Polar Bears in 2013, recording career bests in batting average (.362), home runs (3), RBI (11) and runs (20). She also had a hit in 19 of her 25 games and recorded a 10-game hitting streak.
Raske up to the task
Mother McAuley graduate Alex Raske was one of two Saint Mary’s University (Minn.) softball players chosen to the 2013 All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference First Team. In addition, the sophomore catcher/outfielder was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association’s Second Team All-Midwest Region.
Raske led the Cardinals in homers (6), RBI (36), total bases (68) and slugging percentage (.636). She hit .393 with six doubles and a triple. She had 16 multihit games and 11 multiple-RBI efforts, both team highs.
Raske helped Saint Mary’s finish 18-15 overall and to its third consecutive MIAC Tournament appearance.
Placekicker Fernando Albarran was one of two Aurora University football players to be named to the USA Football Network’s College Football Division III Preseason All-American Team.
Albarran, a Reavis alum, was a fourth team selection. The Oak Lawn native was a Second Team All-Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference selection in 2012. The senior was 4-of-8 on field-goal attempts, including a long of 41 yards. Albarran also was 39-of-44 on extra-point tries and had 11 touchbacks on 57 kickoffs.
