Football: St. Rita tops Danville 42-7

St. Rita scored touchdowns on six of its first seven drives of the first half to open a 42-0 lead and enjoy a running clock for the entire second half. Both the offensive and defensive first units sat in the second half.
The Mustangs deferred on the opening toss and it paid off as the ball stayed in the Danville end for the entire first quarter as Rita took a 28-0 lead.
St. Rita’s starting, defensive unit led by Matt Mitchell, Dan Gleaves, Mike Lurquin, John Connolly and Marty Bechina, held Danville to just 37 net yards in the first half. The defense limited Vanderbilt-bound quarterback Trent Sherfield to just 34 yards of offense in the first half.
BY THE NUMBERS
St. Rita’s Tommy Mister ran for 118 yards and two touchdowns and threw a 39-yard TD to Xavier Allen in the first half. Mitchell led the Mustangs with six tackles in one half and Gleaves had two sacks. D.J. Miles had two TDs and Tyre Lee also ran one in for St. Rita.
