Football: Late TD gives Evergreen Park 35-32 win over Phillips

Evergreen Park’s Jonathan O’Brien connected with Jacquet McClendon on a 15-yard touchdown pass with 37.7 seconds left in the game, and Tim Walsh intercepted a pass, his second pick of the game, in the end zone with 3 seconds remaining to stop a comeback by Phillips (0-2) and seal the win for the Mustangs.
Facing a fourth-and-9 with 43 seconds left and Evergreen Park trailing 32-27, O’Brien threw a pass along the sideline past a diving defender and into the hands of Eric Gurrister for a first down to keep the drive alive.
Phillips running back Corey Warren had 118 yards.
McClendon (10 catches, 92 yards), Gurrister (7 catches, 75 yards, TD) and Keyshawn Carpenter (31 carries, 159 yards led Evergreen Park (2-0).
BY THE NUMBERS
Despite throwing four interceptions in the first half, O’Brien finished the night 16-of-32 for 221 yards and two touchdowns.
BREAKING IT DOWN
The Mustangs won for the first time on the field after earning a victory last week by forfeit. Friday also marked Evergreen Park’s first game on its new field turf.
