Ole Miss wide receiver Laquon Treadwell was named the SEC Freshman of the Week for the period ending Sept. 1.
In the Rebels’ 39-35 victory at Vanderbilt, the Crete-Monee graduate led the team in receiving with nine catches for 82 yards in his college debut. Treadwell’s nine catches are an Ole Miss freshman record and the most by a Rebel since Mike Espy had nine in 2005 against Auburn.
The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder also caught a key 2-point conversion in the third quarter as Ole Miss rallied from 11 points down. In one stretch during the quarter, Treadwell hauled in a pass on three straight plays and four of five.
Through the first two games of the season, Treadwell, the SouthtownStar 2012 Football Player of the Year, was Mississippi’s leading receiver with 11 catches for 109 yards.
Two Southland residents were among four Western Illinois football players named to the College Football Performance Awards Honorable Mention list after the season-opening 42-9 victory Aug. 29 over visiting Hampton.
Lauded were senior defensive lineman Ryan Demming (St. Rita) and junior linebacker Kevin Kintzel (Lincoln-Way West).
Demming scored his first collegiate touchdown when he returned a fumble six yards for a score. The Chicagoan also recorded the Leathernecks’ lone sack, one of his two tackles in the game.
Kintzel came up with his second career interception and first collegiate TD when he returned a Hampton pass 12 yards for a touchdown. The New Lenox native also forced a fumble that led to Demming’s touchdown in the second quarter.
Kintzel also rushed for a 2-point conversion and finished with four tackles.
Four Southland residents on Illinois State’s football team were named to the Missouri Valley Football Conference’s 2012-13 Honor Roll that recognizes academic achievement of student-athletes. To qualify, a student-athlete must have recorded a minimum 3.0 grade-point average for a specified term (fall 2012), must have been a member of an athletic team and must have a minimum of 12 hours of enrollment during the fall.
Honored were defensive back Mike Banks (Mount Carmel), defensive back Ezra Thompson (Lincoln-Way East), quarterback Blake Winkler (Lincoln-Way East) and punter Patrick Wright (Providence).
The big Lasowski
Olivet Nazarene baseball player Kevin Lasowski (Illiana Christian) was named to the 2013 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Honorable Mention All-American Team. He was one of 36 athletes named to the team.
The senior relief pitcher and designated hitter pitched in 22 regular-season games for the Tigers and finished with a 1-1 record, a program-record 11 saves, the latter tops in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference and fifth in the NAIA. He also had a 1.27 ERA.
He allowed 17 hits, five runs, eight walks and had 32 strikeouts in 281/3 innings.
As a position player, Lasowski played in 43 games, starting 42. He batted .258 in 132 at-bats with 34 hits, five doubles and one home run. He also had 12 walks, 27 runs, 42 total bases, 22 RBI and four stolen bases. He finished with a .318 slugging percentage and .344 OBP.
Lasowski is the first ONU baseball player to achieve All-American status since 2005. Since 2000, there have been 12 Tigers who have earned All-American status. Lasowski also was a member of the All-CCAC First Team this season.
