ASICS Preview: Lincoln-Way Central (9-1) won all three of its matches, the last a 25-15, 23-25, 25-23 decision over Crystal Lake South in the championship at Mother McAuley. Mariel Leibovitz dished out 122 assists in the two-day tournament for the Knights, whose other standouts included Maria Brown (48 kills, 34 digs) and Jacqueline Langer (44 kills, 33 digs, 10 blocks).
Wheaton Classic: Sandburg (11-4) finished third by defeating St. Charles North 25-17, 15-25, 25-22. Sami Knight provided 38 assists and Julia Borschel had 32 kills for the Eagles, who won two of three matches on the day, including a 17-25, 25-17, 25-23 decision over Marist in the semifinals. Kelly McGovern also starred for Sandburg, chalking up 48 digs. Marist (7-4) lost its first two contests before outlasting Libertyville 23-25, 25-16, 25-11 for seventh place. Molly Mayo racked up 109 assists in three matches for the RedHawks and Lizzie Zaleski had 31 kills. Lemont (12-4) captured the Silver Division crown by topping Wheaton North 25-16, 25-17.
Maine East Invitational: Lexi Mantas spiked 19 kills as Stagg (8-7) lost to Riverside-Brookfield 27-25, 22-25, 25-23 in the title round. Gianna Petrelli added 10 assists for the Chargers, who won four of five matches in the weekend tournament, including a 25-22, 25-22 verdict over De La Salle in semifinal play.
Stagg 2, Downers Grove South 1: Roberto Torres and Matt Kois scored for host Stagg (5-1).
Mount Carmel 2, Hinsdale South 1: Dan Balog and Jonah Nuno-Sheldon keyed host Mount Carmel (4-4-3).
Illinois Lutheran 2, Beecher 1: Goals from Evan Henschel and Justin Schmidtke propelled Illinois Lutheran (9-2, 4-0) in the River Valley match at Toyota Park.
St. Laurence 1, Kennedy 1: Zach Johnson provided the goal for host St. Laurence (4-4-1).
Bremen 2, Andrew 2: Christian Lagunas had both goals for visiting Bremen (6-2-1).
Lincoln-Way West 2, Lincoln-Way East 1: Dan Petron and Kevin Staniszewski registered goals for Lincoln-Way West (7-2-2) in the championship at Lincoln-Way North. Lincoln-Way East fell to 5-3-1.
Sandburg 5, Bloom 3: Mike Klimkowski’s two goals powered Sandburg (7-3) in the third-place match at Lincoln-Way East. Ricky Aldape notched a pair of scores for Bloom (8-4).
Marist 2, Manteno 1: Goals by Brendan McHugh and Carter Olson propelled Marist (6-4) at Lincoln-Way Central.
Lincoln-Way Central 2, Joliet West 2: Jacob Lysik and Tyler Massa scored for host Lincoln-Way Central. Oscar Zuniga had both assists for the Knights.
St. Ignatius 2, Eisenhower 0: Mike Knight and Lucas Kotlowitz had the goals for St. Ignatius at Lincoln-Way West.
Green Wedge Cup: The Southwest Suburban Conference defeated the Southwest Prairie Conference 21-6 at Green Garden, where play was conducted under the modified Ryder Cup format. Sandburg’s Nick Adduce was the medalist by carding a 67.
Mount Assisi Invitational: Runner-up Ashley Kay shot an 84 as Marist (387) won the team title at Cog Hill. Stagg (423) was second and Mount Assisi (427) third. Trinity’s Lindsay Dodovich (79) was the medalist, with her closest competition coming from Kay and third-place finisher Natalie Collina (92) of Stagg.
Celtic Swing Invitational: Lincoln-Way East’s Kelly Sterling led all golfers with a 74 at Broken Arrow. Lockport (396) edged Lincoln-Way Central by two strokes in winning the Silver Division title. Hinsdale Central (322) took top honors in the Gold ahead of runner-up Lyons (341) and third-place occupant Lincoln-Way East (367).
Lockport Invitational: Rachel Polke and Emily McCann won the Flight B doubles crown as Lockport Maroon (30) tied St. Ignatius for first place in the eight-team tournament. Gaby Rosales captured the singles title in leading Marian Catholic (15) to a fourth-place finish.
Boys Cross Country
Dave Brady Invitational: Homewood-Flossmoor’s Matt Anyiwo (15 minutes, 12.6 seconds) won the 2.9-mile race at Bullfrog Lake in Willow Springs. He finished two spots in front of Nick Minnella (15:20.7), who led Oak Lawn (68 points) to top honors among the 18 scoring squads. Glenbard East (70) was second, followed by Homewood-Flossmoor (129), Leyden (130) and host Argo (141).
Illiana Christian Invitational: Medalist Nick Fiene (15:39) and runner-up Tony Wondaal (15:44) boosted Illiana Christian (24) to the championship at North Creek Meadow in Lansing. Ben Walczak (15:56) was third on the 3-mile course in guiding Lincoln-Way East (40) to second place. Bremen (89), Marian Catholic (135) and T.F. South (145) rounded out the top five in the 13-team event.
Richard Spring Invitational: Sandburg (225) finished fifth out of 63 teams in the meet hosted by Peoria Notre Dame. The Eagles’ top runner was Greg Burzinski (15:07), who placed 20th at Detweiller Park.
Minooka Flight Invitational: Lockport’s Will Giroux (15:38) was fifth in Flight 1 – the top race in the 19-team meet. John Chomiak (16:14) came in ninth in leading Lincoln-Way North (56) to a seventh-place finish, two spots in front of Lockport (62) at Channahon Community Park.
Mustang Run: Sherman McLawhorn (17:04.1) was 30th in the 3-mile race for St. Rita (285), which placed 10th out of 11 teams at Downers Grove South.
Girls Cross Country
Dave Brady Invitational: Thornwood’s Deandra Stokes (19:31.7) was the top area runner, placing third in the 2.9-mile race. The Lincoln-Way Central duo of Heidi Killinger (19:37.6) and Jenn Whitney (19:41.8) were next, finishing fifth and seventh, respectively. Their performances propelled the Knights (99) to a third-place showing behind Lyons (26) and Morton (95). Reavis (182) was sixth and Thornwood (184) seventh in the 17-team field.
Illiana Christian Invitational: Illiana Christian (37) secured first place behind medalist Alexa Beezhold (19:22). Bishop McNamara (42) took second and Chicago Christian (121) third in the 12-team meet. Bishop McNamara’s Cassidy Devenouges (19:54) and Bloom’s Gina Narcisi (19:56) rounded out the top three individuals in the 3-mile contest.
Minooka Flight Invitational: Taylor Campos (19:08) was sixth in Flight 2 in helping Lemont (60) finish eighth out of 16 teams. Lincoln-Way North (70) was 10th as Abby Casey (18:54) turned in an eighth-place performance in Flight 1.
Richard Spring Invitational: Sandburg (453) finished 13th and Marist (479) 15th in the 58-team meet. The top area individual was Sandburg’s Grace Kelly (18:20), who was 39th.
St. Xavier 25-25-25, Lourdes 18-20-20: Heidi Gregerson slammed 13 kills, Kelli Shaffer distributed 32 assists and Dominique Aramburu added 21 digs for visiting St. Xavier (5-6).
