St. Rita took advantage of the 22-man roster of the Spartans (1-3) to improve to 4-0 in the Chicago Catholic League crossover at Hales. St. Rita quarterback Tommy Mister, an Iowa State recruit, was sacked four times by the Spartans but did his damage in the air (92 yards passing) and on the ground (8- and 3-yard touchdown runs) in three quarters of play.
Offensive lineman Simon Flores picked up a fumble by Mister at the 7-yard line and stumbled into the end zone to give the Mustangs a 21-0 lead with 6:21 left in the first half. Flores left the game in the third quarter with what looked like a serious leg injury.
St. Rita’s Tyre Lee had 10 carries for 117 yards, including a nifty 31-yard TD run with 3:23 left in the third to put his team up 35-6.
BY THE NUMBERS
The Mustangs had 56 more players on their roster and wore down the Spartans, outgaining them 423-224.
BREAKING IT DOWN
St. Rita’s first-string defense allowed a 50-yard touchdown run by Spartans quarterback Dominick Christian with 3:39 in the second quarter, but didn’t give up too much more before giving way to the reserves. Daniel Gleaves, Matthew Mitchell and Servando Duran each recorded sacks.
