Highly touted quarterback Jack Beneventi finished 13-of-21 passing for 156 yards and kicker John Duvic set a school record with a 54-yard field goal as visiting Benet (5-0, 2-0) romped in the East Suburban Catholic Conference. Marian Catholic fell to 2-3, 0-3.
A 42-yard touchdown run by Brad Sznajder broke a 7-all tie. The Redwings forced a three-and-out on the next series, and Nick McTarnaghan ran in another score four minutes later for a 21-7 advantage.
Duvic, whose 54-yard field goal broke the old mark of 53, set by his father. Duvic added field goals of 40, 53 and 31 yards.
Marian running back Dillon Burns scored on a 37-yard screen pass from Patrick Schmidt. Benet’s Joe Weidenbach led the team in receiving (71 yards) and added an interception. Benet’s defense is allowing an average of 7.6 points per game.
“The defensive line was just stuffing the run. We lost a lot of guys last year, but our communication is allowing us to play really well.” — Weidenbach
