After losing a tight game to Loyola last week, Mount Carmel (6-1, 3-1) took out its frustration on St. Laurence in the Catholic League. The Caravan limited the Vikings (3-4, 0-3) to 23 total yards.
The Caravan’s 41 points at the half, which was too much for St. Laurence to overcome. What was remarkable about Mount Carmel’s onslaught was the Caravan achieved the 41 halftime points by recording only one first down, thanks to four runs of 40 or more yards that resulted in touchdowns.
Mount Carmel senior running back Jimmy Mickens was a nightmare for the Vikings. Mickens had just eight carries for a whopping 193 yards and three touchdowns.
BY THE NUMBERS
Mount Carmel punished St. Laurence with its running game, recording 504 yards and seven touchdowns. The Caravan had three running backs eclipse the century mark with Mickens leading the way with 193 yards and senior Justin Pebbles and junior Nikolaus Giles each amassing 100 yards. Mount Carmel averaged 14.8 yards per carry.
“It was a complete team effort. Without them, I wouldn’t be able to achieve what I did today.” – Mickens
