Chris Jernigan, Chris Slayton and Nyles Morgan sparked a swarming Crete-Monee defense that limited Rich South to a single first down in the opening half. The Warriors are allowing less than 12 points per game as they improved to 7-1 and 4-0 in the Southland Conference.
Crete-Monee turned an eight-point lead into a blowout in 10 seconds: Raphael Vallot scored on a 67-yard pass from Frank Douglas, the Warriors recovered the ensuing onside kick and Trevon Smith ran 49 yards for a score on the next play for a 30-6 advantage.
Smith led the running back-by-committee approach with 105 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries.
Rich South (1-7, 0-4) scored on a 48-yard fumble recovery by Tevin Sudduth, who also added three tackles for loss and four reception for 33 yards. Douglas finished with 202 passing yards and Jonathon Draper added two touchdowns and a pair of two-point conversions for the Warriors.
“The word of the week at practice was ‘hit’, and that’s exactly what we did.” — Jernigan
