Football: St. Rita beats De La Salle 35-13 in Catholic League playoffs

Updated: January 16, 2014 3:28AM

The pelting rain and howling wind did their best to try to hamper St. Rita’s offense, but the Mustangs ran all over De Le Salle in a 35-13 victory in the Catholic League playoffs.

St. Rita (10-3) will host Fenwick in the semifinals.

The Mustangs produced 400 total yards and 20 first downs, while De La Salle (6-6) struggled with 189 total yards.

The Mustangs’ offensive attack revolved around two seniors, quarterback Tommy Mister and running back D.J. Miles.

Of St. Rita’s 270 rushing yards, Mister ran for 89 and Miles had 115 on the ground.

“We wanted to set the tone early in the game,” St. Rita coach Todd Huska said. “Mister and Miles helped us do that.”

After the St. Rita defense blocked De La Salle’s first punt of the game to put the Mustangs in the red zone, Miles began the scoring with a 1-yard TD run.

On St. Rita’s next possession, Mister provided the spark with his legs and arm. He capped the drive by finding wide receiver John Ladd in the back of the end zone for a 4-yard touchdown to put St. Rita up 14-0.

After the wind knocked down a De La Salle punt that barely traveled 20 yards, Miles was at it again. He zipped to his left in the second quarter for another 1-yard touchdown to give the Mustangs a commanding 21-0 lead.

After the Meteors offense stalled on their third possession of the game, Mister scored from 15 yards out to give St. Rita a 28-0 lead.

“If they were looking pass, we would run on them. If they were looking to stop me, they would forget about Miles,” said Mister, who had 189 total yards and three touchdowns. “Even if they thought they picked right, they picked wrong.”
