Richards’ full team is back, as Class 6A runner-up football players Spencer Tears and Dedrick Shannon Jr. returned to the lineup in Friday night’s South Suburban crossover in Oak Lawn. Each sank two free throws in the final 29 seconds to help turn a four-point lead into an eight-point win.
Richards (5-0, 1-0) was sluggish early, getting down 7-2 to the Hawks (2-3, 0-1). A nine-point run helped give the Bulldogs the lead for good. Josh Meier and Jordan Cottrell each had four points in that run.
Meier, a 6-foot-8 senior heading to Chicago State, had 26 points, including 22 in the first half. Shannon had 16 of his 20 points in the second half, including a dunk with 3:40 left in the game.
BY THE NUMBERS
This is the first time Richards is a 5-0 since 2009-10 season. It’s also the first time the Bulldogs beat Hillcrest since that season. DeAngelo Isby had 25 points for Hillcrest and Taylor Adway added 17.
“This feels great. No one in this locker room ever beat Hillcrest before.” — Meier.
