Illiana Christian took a while to warm up from beyond the arc, but once the Vikings got hot there was no stopping them as they knocked off host Elmwood Park. The Vikings made just one of their first nine tries from three-point range but hit 7-of-14 after that.
The Tigers (1-4) led 31-30 at halftime but struggled mightily in the third quarter, shooting just 3-of-8 shots from the floor as Illiana Christian (4-1) took a 43-39 lead into the fourth. The Vikings attempted just four shots in the fourth quarter but were 9-of-13 from the free-throw line.
Sophomore Matthew Zandstra had a fantastic fourth quarter for Illiana Christian, making his only two shots from the floor, both of which were three-pointers. Zandstra, who finished with 13 points, also hit all four of his free-throw tries in the fourth.
BY THE NUMBERS
The Vikings’ Caleb Jonkman led all scorers with 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting. As a team, Illiana Christian shot 20-of-43 from the floor while Elmwood Park was 19-of-45. Presley Garrett led the Tigers with 13 points while Ian Nunez and Joe Uvelli had 12 points apiece.
“It was coming down to the end and we just needed a little lift. They found me open and then I was happy to hit my free throws.” — Zandstra
