THE SKINNY

Fenwick jumped out to an 8-2 lead and was never threatened in the Catholic League crossover in Oak Park. The Friars defense set a season low for points allowed by an opponent. The Fenwick defense allowed only 42 points in its previous game against St. Francis de Sales.

TURNING POINT

The Friars (5-2, 3-0) scored the first nine points in the second quarter to take a 28-11 lead. Rice (3-4, 1-2) ended the streak with three baskets late in the second quarter, but Fenwick still led 28-17 at halftime.

THE STAR

Senior forward Tom Planek scored a game-high 15 points and had six rebounds. He had eight points in the first half to lead all scorers, but was probably most effective at the free-throw line where he shot 7-of-9.

BY THE NUMBERS

The Crusaders shot only 6-of-35 from the floor in the first half and went 4-for-23 in the second quarter. Senior guard Quinn Niego led Rice with 13 points, while Ray Rubio and Dan Scanlon each had 11 points.

QUOTABLE

“We knew this was a game we had to win to make a statement. We did not want to let them hang around. We wanted to punch at them right away and at the start of the second half.” — Planek
