Providence had everything working Friday in the Holiday Hockey Classic, storming to a 4-0 win over Sandburg in Bensenville.
“There were some scoring opportunities that we missed early” Celtics coach Nick Iaciancio said. “It was a much tighter game (than Thursday’s 8-3 win over New Trier Blue). From a speed standpoint, they matched us pretty well.”
Providence outshot Sandburg 24-18.
The Celtics’ first goal came from Rich Yusa just under two minutes into the first period. Mike Vennetti scored a power-play goal a minute into the second.
“They were fast, they were quick and they forechecked hard on me,” Sandburg goaltender Ryan Lewis said. “I think there were a lot of offensive opportunities we missed out on early. We played well for 40 minutes, and then we just got tired. I thought we hung with them, though.”
John Duzansky and Vennetti added the final two goals for Providence. Goaltender Ryan Iaciancio made 18 saves for the shutout.
“We knew we had to watch out and stop the puck from certain lines,” Iaciancio said. “They slowed us down a little bit, but in the end we found our base and kept going”
