Well, they’ve done it again. The Providence Catholic hockey club brought their speed and clobbered St. Viator 9-0 in the quarterfinals of the Holiday Hockey Classic Saturday afternoon in Bensenville.
It’s like deja vu for the Celtics, busting out of the gate and scoring within minus of puck drop. And then again and again without showing a shred of exhaustion.
“We got off to a good start, that first goal was key,” said Celtics head coach Nick Iaciancio. “By using everyone on our bench we’re able to keep that pep in our step.”
There was no slowing down either. Dan Ricker knocked in his first of two goals within a minute and a half of puck drop and Eric Mounce followed with a goal off a big breakaway and Matt Iaciancio knocked one in to make it 3-0 entering the second half.
Then things got messy. WIthin eight seconds of the second half Mike Vennetti launched one between the pipes and the domino effect began. From there it was Jake Dillman, Ricker’s second, Matt Payton and Vennetti’s second. The Celtics had no plans in letting up despite their lead.
“We played all of our defensemen, kept the lines moving and our kids continued to execute,” Iacianco added. “That’s key right there.”
Providence will play Naperville Central, who beat St. Rita 5-1, in the semifinals Sunday.
