Boys Basketball: Three things learned

Updated: February 10, 2014 11:10AM

1. Don’t sleep on Homewood-Flossmoor. The Vikings are just 6-5. However, four of those losses were by three points, to Marian Catholic, Proviso East, Morton and Hinsdale Central. If the Vikings can generate additional offense from their guards and improve their free-throw shooting, they could make some serious noise during March Madness.

2. Quality big men abound. While the chance to see Marian Catholic guard Tyler Ulis up close and personal is worth the price of admission — and then some — I’d strongly advise plunking down your hard-earned money to watch Richards’ 6-foot-7 Josh Meier, Hillcrest’s 6-8 Taylor Adway, Oak Forest’s 6-8 Kyle Flanagan and H-F’s 6-8 Tai Odiase. It’s been a while since the local scene boasted such skilled big men, all of whom are capable of scoring 20 points and providing a menacing presence on defense.

3. The South Suburban Blue title is up for grabs. With a 25-year conference winning streak on the line, Hillcrest, despite its struggles, remains the team to beat. Hey, the Hawks have earned that respect. But it’s clear that Hillcrest lacks the deep roster of seasons past to overwhelm foes. It appears Oak Forest, Lemont, T.F. South and T.F. North have the means to dethrone the Hawks in the Blue.
