Even a three hours-plus bus ride to Joliet Catholic that delayed the game by more than an hour didn’t stop Carmel from coming out and establishing its game early. Carmel (12-3, 1-1 East Suburban Catholic Conference) raced to a 9-1 lead and never looked back.
The Corsairs led 19-4 after the first quarter, connecting on 6-of-13 shots from the floor and limiting Joliet Catholic (6-11, 0-1) to just 1-of-8 shooting while forcing four turnovers. A John George bucket at the second-quarter buzzer gave Carmel a 30-11 halftime lead.
Carmel forward George scored a team-high 14 points (5-of-10 shooting) and had three blocks. His three blocks all came in the first quarter.
BY THE NUMBERS
Carmel’s Nickai Poyser had 14 points while teammate Michael Burr added 12. Jalen Jackson led Joliet Catholic with 11 points.
“I thought our team did a really good job in the first quarter, and once we built that lead we carried that for the rest of the game.” — George
