Richards held Lemont to 34 percent shooting and made enough free throws to post a 60-56 South Suburban Red road win Tuesday night in Lemont.

The Bulldogs hit 23-of-34 from the charity stripe to run their marks to 11-3 overall and 6-0 in the league. Lemont made just 21-of-62 shots in falling to 9-7, 4-2.

“It’s a conference win on the road, and we’ll take it,” Richards coach John Chappetto said. “That’s important. We’re 6-0 in the conference — and our goal is to win our conference.”

“We didn’t shoot the ball particularly well and their constant defensive pressure had an effect on us,” Lemont coach Rick Runaas said. “We were around the basket, especially in the second half, but couldn’t score.”

Dedrick Shannon Jr. led the Bulldogs with 23 points, including 13-of-17 shooting from the line. Jaylan Catledge and Josh Meier each had double-doubles of 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Rory Cunningham led Lemont with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Mike Wisz added 10 points and seven rebounds.

“The one thing we thought we’d be able to do is put pressure on their guards and make it as hard as we can on Mike Wisz,” Chappetto said. “He’s a great high school basketball player.”

Richards led 12-11 after a quarter and 24-20 late in the second. A free throw by Ryan Shereck and a three-pointer by Austin Gumber tied it at 24. A free throw by Shannon with 2.1 seconds left in the second quarter gave the visitors a 27-26 lead at the break.

Lemont had more fouls (12) than field goals (8) through the first two quarters.

Richards scored the first seven points of the third quarter. A layup by Spencer Tears, a long three-pointer by Thaer Othman and a floater in the lane off a second chance by Shannon gave the Bulldogs a 34-26 lead with 6:16 left in the third.

Lemont did not hit a third-quarter field goal during the first 4:45. The drought allowed Richards to build a 40-29 lead on a floater in the lane midway through the quarter by Shannon. The visitors took a 46-37 lead into the final quarter.

Trailing 49-41, Lemont switched to a fullcourt press. Gumber’s three-pointer cut it to 53-48. Luis Marquez’s putback with 2:22 left cut the lead to 54-50.

Richards hit 6-of-9 from the free-throw line over the final 1:24 to leave the door open for a Lemont comeback.

“We were right there and that’s all we can ask for,” Runaas said. “We had a chance.”
