1. Oak Forest is the team to beat in the South Suburban. The Bengals, led by Danny Swan (113 pounds) and Francis Edelen (106), are the league’s top team and should cruise to their second straight tournament title. Others to watch in the tourney are Reavis’ Sam Almousa (138), Oak Lawn’s Joe Robinson (160), Tinley Park’s Eric Schultz (170) and Bremen’s Javier Soto (182).
2. Battles loom in SouthWest Suburban Tournament. Lockport has been the top dog this season, but Lincoln-Way Central, Sandburg and Lincoln-Way West all could make runs at the crown. Thornwood’s Kris Williams (120), Central’s Bryce Gorman (170) and Lockport’s Tyler Johnson (195) all are undefeated. Watch out for Stagg heavyweight Mantis Drukteinis.
3. Mount Carmel is the favorite in the Catholic League. Led by Northwestern-bound Bryce Brill, arguably the top wrestler in Illinois, the Caravan will look to hold off St. Rita, Brother Rice and St. Laurence to win its fourth straight league tourney. Check out the 113-pound class, where returning state champ Rudy Yates (Brother Rice) could meet state medalist Jake Silzer (St. Rita).
