Boys Basketball: Hawkins comes up big for Marist in 68-59 win over Nazareth

THE SKINNY

Coming off a win Tuesday over rival Brother Rice, host Marist returned to conference play, executing in the fourth quarter for the East Suburban Catholic Conference win.

TURNING POINT

With Marist leading 56-53 in the fourth, RedHawks forward Chamar Hawkins drove down the lane, drew contact and hung in the air for the athletic layup. The sophomore hit the free throw for a three-point play, putting Marist up 59-53 with 2:30 to go in the game.

THE STARS

Hawkins scored 13 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter to help Marist (15-4, 2-1) hold on for the win. Michael Brooks scored 17 points to lead Nazareth.

BY THE NUMBERS

Hawkins’ three-point play helped spark a 14-6 offensive spurt to end the game for the RedHawks. Brian Holland (14 points), Jeremiah Ferguson (10 points) and Kevin Lerna (10 points, 9 rebounds) contributed for Marist. Nazareth (8-8, 1-3) shot 6-of-15 from the floor in the fourth quarter, tying the game at 50 on a three-pointer by Christian Davis (13 points).
