Boys Swimming: Winning titles thrice as nice for Stagg

Updated: February 27, 2014 6:53AM

For Stagg, the regular season is turning out to be much more than preparation for the conference, sectional and state meets.

With titles at the Downers Grove South and Lincoln-Way North invitationals already to its credit, Stagg outdid the field Saturday at the 11-team Lockport Invitational and won the meet with 368 points to 334.5 for runner-up Riverside-Brookfield.

Wheaton co-op (269) finished third, St. Ignatius (253) was fourth and Lockport (218.5) was fifth.

“This is the first time in my 10 years as coach we’ve taken first place in three invitationals,’’ Stagg coach Jason Carr said. “This was our goal. Once we took first at Downers Grove, we wanted Lincoln-Way North. After Lincoln-Way North, we realized we could definitely do Lockport.’’

Stagg opened the competition Saturday with a win in the 200-yard medley relay and ended the meet with a victory in the 400 freestyle relay.

Lucas Smiarowski, Harlan Long, Zack Amendola and Evan Johnson took the medley relay in a meet record 1 minute, 39.27 seconds. That foursome returned to win the 400 free relay in 3:17.32. In between, the same individuals piled up more points.

Amendola won the 100 butterfly (53.06), Long was second in the 200 freestyle (1:49.22) and the 100 breaststroke (1:01.75), Johnson was second in the 100 free (49.74) and third in the 50 free (22.68) and Smiarowski was second in the 500 free (4:49.68).

“We had a lot of momentum coming in. I was excited for this meet,’’ Long said. “I was thinking about it the whole week, how stoked I was to race.’’

Long said he was “really excited’’ to get a season-best in the breaststroke and break the 1:02 mark.

“This was a tuneup for conference, sectionals and state,’’ Long said. “See what we have to work on.’’

Smiarowski, a freshman, was second to Bloomington senior Michael Wolfe in the 500 free (4:38.02, meet record). Wolfe was seventh at the state meet last season in 4:34.07.
