1. The state playoffs are here. It might be hard for the Southland to top last season’s individual state championship count (9), but a number of individuals will are in the thick of contention. The usual suspects include the defending champs: Mount Carmel’s Bryce Brill (152 pounds), Thornwood’s Kris Williams (120), Brother Rice’s Rudy Yates (113) and Oak Forest’s Danny Swan (113, 2A). The road to Champaign starts with Saturday’s regionals.
2. The rivalry continues. Marist and Sandburg renew their postseason fight at the Class 3A Shepard Regional. Sandburg ousted the RedHawks the past two seasons at this stage en route to back-to-back state titles. Marist is favored to end the streak. Also in attendance: Thornwood’s Williams and Dwayne Franklin (220), and Stagg’s Tyler Mackessy (152) and Mantis Drukteinis (285). That quartet has combined to go 101-7 on the season.
3. What about Class 2A? Oak Forest, the top 2A team from the Southland, will host a regional Saturday. The Bengals are a safe bet to outlast undefeated Johnny Gahagan (138) and the rest of St. Laurence in the team standings. Rich Central’s Jabari Moody (113) and Tinley Park’s Eric Schultz (170) and David McDonald (132) also could make noise. In other 2A tilts, look for Lincoln-Way West to triumph at LaSalle-Peru and Morgan Park to surprise at T.F. North.
