Thornwood 52, Lincoln-Way Central 51
Thornwood (16-4, 9-0) survived the upset bid of former Thunderbirds coach Bob Curran and Lincoln-Way Central (10-10, 3-6) as Rashaad Alexander put back Chelby Frazier’s missed free throw with two seconds left in the SouthWest Suburban Red contest in South Holland.
A three-pointer by Alex Parks (12 points) gave Central a 51-49 lead with 1:18 left, but Parks missed the front end of a one-and-one with 8.8 seconds left and Frazier was fouled in the backcourt with four seconds left. He made the first, setting up Alexander’s heroics.
Alexander (6 rebounds) scored eight of his 11 points in the fourth, helping Thornwood overcome the heroics of Central’s Brad Bass. Bass poured in 31 points and had 10 rebounds before fouling out with 3:27 left. He was the only Knight to convert a field goal until 1:30 remained in the third.
BY THE NUMBERS
Kaliph Fagan led Thornwood with 13 points and seven rebounds. Kevin Mampe had six points for Central.
“We got lucky. The ball fell right into (Alexander’s) hands for a wide-open layup. I don’t know if that means it was meant to be, but we got a lucky bounce or we would’ve lost.” — Thornwood coach Paul Slavich
