THE SKINNY

Host Sandburg broke open a tight SouthWest Suburban Blue game in the fourth quarter on the strength of a 20-8 surge, fueled by Niko Kogionis and Niko Cahue.

TURNING POINT

The Eagles (8-12, 4-5) and the Steelmen (13-8, 5-4) were tied at 35 before Kogionis buried a three-pointer at the 4:49 mark of the fourth quarter, giving Sandburg a lead it would not relinquish. Kogionis and Cahue scored eight points apiece during the scoring outburst over the last four minutes of the period.

THE STARS

Cahue led all scorers with 24 points and 13 rebounds. Kogionis added 14 points. Jaylen McGee came off the bench to lead Joliet Central with 11 points.

BY THE NUMBERS

Joliet Central shot 5-of-24 in the first half, yet still led 18-16 at halftime. The Eagles finished 15-of-33 from the field and 20-of-25 from the free-throw line.

QUOTABLE

“We moved the basketball and we took care of the basketball, and eventually, we got some good shots. I thought we did a nice job of getting the ball inside to draw some fouls.” — Sandburg coach Todd Allen
