Jim Malec, who guided Andrew football to a 18-13 record over three seasons, resigned Thursday.

The Thunderbolts qualified for the playoffs all three seasons under Malec, finishing 7-4 in 2011, 6-4 in ’12 and 5-5 in ’13.

“It’s too bad, it really is,” Andrew athletic director Rich Piatchek said. “I’m very disappointed for Jim. He was very excited about the future of the program. But in the best interests of him and his family, I support his decision to resign.”

Piatchek estimated a two-month timetable for naming Malec’s successor.

“We’ll go through the process and make the best decision for the school,” Piatchek said. “It’s going to take some time, but we’ll find the best coach for Andrew football.”
