Thornwood coach Paul Slavich said most of his players are capable of blowing up the scoreboard. Friday night against Andrew, it was Donzel Vinson lighting the fuse. Vinson put on a shooting display as Thornwood (18-4, 11-0) blew past Andrew (4-16, 1-10) in SouthWest Suburban Red play after trailing by five in the second quarter.
Andrew tied the game at 31 on a three-pointer by Joey Krutilla (9 points), but Vinson answered with a silky step-back three. Thornwood finished the third frame with a 22-7 surge.
Vinson splashed four three-pointers in the third quarter and scored a season-high 21 points on 7-of-10 shooting. In the fourth quarter, he buried a shot a few steps from beyond the three-point arc with a defender draped all over him.
BY THE NUMBERS
Andrew’s Aaron Williams scored 16 points and Jacob Platt added seven and some slick backdoor passing. Brian Thomas and Chelby Frazier chipped in 10 points apiece for Thornwood.
“After I hit the first few, (the rim) started looking big — real big. It felt like I couldn’t miss.” — Vinson
