Stagg 49, Lockport 47
Max Strus hit a three-pointer with 3.1 seconds left in the game to give Stagg the SouthWest Suburban Blue win at Lockport.
The Chargers (17-7, 6-5) found themselves tied with the Porters (7-11, 4-7) at 46 after Lockport’s Gehrig Hollatz drilled a three-pointer with 14 seconds left. Strus, a 6-foot-6 guard, brought the ball upcourt against Lockport’s Grover Anderson, who played him tight. When Anderson overcommitted on Strus, the Stagg standout took his shot from the top of the key. The Porters’ Ralph Blakney was fouled in the backcourt on the ensuing play. The referee indicated it was in the act of shooting and gave him three free throws. Blakney converted just one of three.
Strus led all scorers with 24 points. Blakney led Lockport with 11 points.
BY THE NUMBERS
Lockport shot 16-of-41 from the field while Stagg was 15-of-33.
“I want the ball in my hands in the last seconds. Coach (John Daniels) wanted me to go one-on-one. Grover (Anderson) played great defense. I saw him over playing. I stepped back. He slipped and it left me with a wide open three.” — Strus
