One of the potential marquee matchups at Saturday’s Class 3A Hinsdale Central Sectional figured to be at 113 pounds between a pair of highly touted wrestlers in Marmion’s Anthony Bosco and Brother Rice’s Rudy Yates.

That marquee match took place on the third-place mat.

Marist’s Nick Lukanich upset previously unbeaten Yates in the semifinals and St. Rita’s Jake Silzer did the same to Bosco, effectively tossing the local rankings out the window.

After Lukanich won 9-8 over Yates, he won a sectional title with a 6-3 decision over Silzer in advancing to next weekend’s individual state finals in Champaign.

“It’s awesome. It’s what I train for,” Lukanich said of beating returning state champion Yates. “I had nothing to lose. He beat me pretty bad last year but I’m a totally different wrestler this year.”

Ameen Hamdan (132), Pete Andreotti (160) and Alex Benoit (182) won sectional crowns for Marist, which saw Jimmy McAuliffe (106), Mark Duda (120), Mike Mullaney (126), Mario Leveille (138) and Nick Gasbarro (152) also advance.

Another marquee title match took place at 120 between Duda and Thornwood’s Kris Williams, who remained unbeaten in a 4-1 decision. Duda had Williams lifted in the air in the second period, but Williams didn’t give up the takedown.

No one has taken the top-ranked, 27-0 Williams down this season.

“I’ve been reversed once but I’m real good at scrambling,” Williams said. “The last couple times we wrestled, he was able to lift me up but still not score so I was confident in that situation.”

Mount Carmel senior Bryce Brill improved to 41-0 in winning the title at 152 in his stretch run to become a three-time state champion.

“I’m really excited to move on to (Northwestern) and compete there but the time has flown by,” Brill said after winning 17-6 on the title mat. “It seems like I was just a freshman and now I have a week left and I’m done, but I’m ready for it.”

The Caravan’s Jacob Tucker (132), Dru Worker (170), Jimmy Mickens (182) and Matthew Reyes also advanced.

Yates topped Bosco for third and will be joined in Champaign by teammate Juan Blanco (132).

Sandburg’s Christian Robertson (126), John Pellegrino (145), Brian Krasowski (160), Patrick Brucki (170) and Hunter Pindel (195) also advanced.

St. Rita’s Austin O’Connor won the crown at 106 with a pin of Downers Grove North’s Pat Walker just 17 seconds into their title match.

“I heard (Walker) was doing headlocks in this tournament so I knew it was coming,” O’Connor said. “Right when he went for the headlock I came around the waist. From here I just need to stay focused, keep my weight under control, and just wrestle hard.”

Colton Kielbasa (120) also advanced for St. Rita, as did Stagg’s Mantas Drukteinis (285).
