Boys Basketball: De La Salle tops Loyola

The Meteors earned their biggest win of the season Sunday by beating Loyola 63-56 in the opening round of the conference tournament.

De La Salle (11-10) used a 13-0 run that bridged the third and fourth quarters to take command of the contest. The Meteors secured the win over the Ramblers (19-4) by going 11-for-12 from the line in the closing two minutes.

“This game means a lot,” said junior guard Martez Cameron, who went 6-for-7 on free throws and finished with 14 points. “This started the road to the (state) playoffs. It was big for us.”

Junior forward Brandon Hutton scored a team-best 17 points and added nine rebounds. Senior guard Aaron Jones scored 13 points, and junior guard Robert Williams pitched in 10 points.

The loss was the Ramblers’ second in a row. Loyola’s Tom Livatino, the Catholic North’s coach of the year, said it’s back to the drawing board.

“We need to re-identify why we were a successful team,” he said. “We used to will our way to wins, but we are not doing that anymore.”

Loyola senior guard Jack Morrissey made six 3-pointers and scored a game-high 22 points. Sophomore guard Chris Harris added 11 points.

“We’re not playing good basketball right now,” Livatino said. “We have to get back to our brand of basketball, and it all starts with the toughness we have not demonstrated.”
